Artist Statement

As a mixed media fibre artist, I choose all manner of reclaimed fabric in my works. Natural fibres like wool, cotton and silks, that have served a previous purpose are of particular value to me. Along with hand selected found objects, I find there is a boundless scope of possibilities, techniques and narratives. Plastic is also given a second life, as I believe we cannot use or recycle it all. Felting with wool is my primary way of incorporating fibre and objects, but there is an important layering aspect to add detail and depth. Other approaches I might utilize, in combination with traditional fibre or textile art techniques could involve: hand and machine stitching in a rustic, free form way, applique, piercing, rusting, burning or melting, ripping and dying with indigo or other eco-type dyes. Experimentation and first-hand trials stoke my creativity. My range of work, along with non-objective 2D, 3D and low relief pieces, includes functional items such as boots, hats, wall hangings, sculpture, shawls, and vessels. Working in a series allows me to present a collective which reflects my interest in themes around social commentary like sustainability, resourcefulness, consumer consumption culture, and climate events, to name a few.
